Comparing the Farm Economy at Statehood and at the Centennial.
Go to the online United States Census of Agriculture (1992). In the left hand box, click on 1992; choose Geographic Area; choose the state of North Dakota. In order to find the 1890 Agricultural Census, use the search box and type in 1890.
Compare agricultural statistics for North Dakota in 1890 (closest census to statehood) and 1992 (closest census to the state’s centennial). In the 1890 census you will have to scroll through the charts to find information. It is a slow process, but you will find a wealth of information about North Dakota’s economy at the time of statehood. The 1992 census will be a bit easier to maneuver.
Choose one crop, or one county and make a comparison. Develop a chart that suits your data to organize the information you acquire.
Has the state developed new crops? Is farm ownership still important, or do most farmers rent their land? Has farm size changed? What other statistics seem important in learning about North Dakota’s farm economy?
