Unit 4: Set 1. Women Suffrage at Statehood - Activity 1

Introduction | Convention Debates | Photos & Documents | Activity 1 | Activity 2

Discussion

  1. Read the arguments. Which members of the convention favor woman suffrage, which do not?

  2. Which is the strongest argument? Why is it strong? If the legislature can offer suffrage to women, can it also deprive them of suffrage at a later time?

  3. Why didn’t the members of the Constitutional Convention who opposed woman suffrage offer amendments? What was their strategy?
