    Record Series: 32294

    Quantity: 10 feet

Abstract: Consists of the working files of former Museum Division curator Norman Paulson. Series includes photographic materials which document his work and may have been used for his reference or for exhibits. Files also include field notebooks and staff logs, which detail projects that Paulson was involved in beginning in 1959 until his retirement in 1992. There are some gaps in the logs, but the span of activities during the years 1975-1992 are meticulously recorded. Miscellaneous files from Paulson’s office are included in the Series, such as index cards with artifact information, correspondence and donations, and research on Sully’s 1863 expedition, the Sibley Trail in North Dakota, and Fort Rice history. Several oral interviews are present in the Series.

Mr. Chi Otto besides painting of himself and his horse during his days on the ranch, also a poem by G. E. Maschke also of Medora, ND. I would like to have Picture and Poem placed with tape recording of Mr. Otto now on file with the State Historical  Society at Bismarck, N. Dak. O S Kopseng
“Chi Otto, A Great Cow Puncher”
Little did we think when we were young
How fast the years were slipping by
But you can’t stay young forever punching cows
No matter how hard you may try.
Chi Otto is one of them cow punchers
Many a rope he has frazzled
He rode the range from daylight to dark
And many a bronc he has dazzled.
He followed the round-up in the early days
Riding night-herd in the rain or snow
To loll the herd you were supposed to sing
How Chi kept them quite, we ain’t to know
Chi Otto is a cowboy with a great sense of humor
And he is still very much alive
But the years in the saddle have quieted him down
He is contented with very little push and drive
His face around Medora is a familiar scene
His pals have passed on to another range
His gun and belt hang on a peg in the bunkhouse wall
And nature is making a very slow change
His pony he turned out in the green grassy hills
His saddle now hangs in a favorite stall
He still meets his friends with a familiar smile
Joking about the last “Boots and Saddles” call.
Our hats are off to a great cow puncher
A cow hand that was second to none
We all hope he will be the old wagon boss
When the last big round-up is done.

                                                              By G. E. Meschke
Congratulations Chi, for your long and healthy life on your Birthday, and we all hope you will have many, many, more.

Though never a major source of food, fish were trapped and eaten by the sedentary tribes who lived along the Missouri. They were also caught on bone hooks. Traps were used to catch land animals also, snares, deadfalls, and pits being used. Eagles, desired for their feathers, were caught by hand in a pit with a camouflaged roof on which bait was placed.
