BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Ruth Olson was born, youngest of nine children, in Parshall, North Dakota on November 6, 1925 to Axel and Grace Mary (Williams) Olson. She attended grade school and high school in Parshall and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at the University of North Dakota in 1946. Ruth married Glenn E. Meiers in Jamestown in 1950 and they had four children: David, Michael, Monte, and Scott.
Ruth was a social worker in Mountrail County which continued her development as an outspoken and effective advocate for women and children in North Dakota. She was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1975 – the first woman to be elected from her district. She served five terms in the Legislature, serving on and chairing the Social Service and Veterans Affairs Committees. She also served on the Appropriations and Judiciary Committees. Her focus was always on respect and protection for those unable to advocate for themselves.
In 1984 Ruth was drafted by the Democratic Women’s Caucus to run for lieutenant governor alongside George Sinner. In 1985 she became the first woman Lieutenant Governor and the first woman to serve as President of the Senate in North Dakota. She chaired the State Commission on Child Support which sought input from all who received or paid child support. She chaired the Governor’s Commission on Children and Adolescents at Risk and was the guiding force for legislation creating a Children’s Commission.
According to the Bismarck Tribune, when Governor Sinner left the state to attend the Reagan Inaugural, Ruth Meiers served as Governor in his absence. When asked by the media if she would like to be called "governor" or "acting governor" she said, "you can call me Ruth."
In 1986 she traveled with a group of 53 American women to the Soviet Union to attend a conference on Women in Leadership.
Ruth Meiers died after a six month battle with cancer on March 19, 1987. Since that time the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House in Bismarck was named in her honor. The House provides shelter for individuals and families, a soup kitchen for the homeless, and emergency food services.
