Biographical Sketch
Funeral services for Leo Dawn Harris, 65, who prior to moving to Livingston (Mont.) in 1950 from Killdeer, N.D., had been employed as a press photographer for the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph and the Chicago Tribune, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Franzen Chapel. The Reverend Bernard McLain, Holbrook church officiated and military graveside honors at Mountain View Cemetery were in charge of Park Post 23, the American Legion.
Harris, who had been ill for some time, died early Monday morning at the Memorial Hospital. He was born February 5, 1896 in Booneville, Mo., the son of the late Frederick Harris and Rose Pugh Harris. The family moved to North Dakota in 1906. He operated a farm at Center, N.D. prior to enlisting in the army in Aug. 1918. After his discharge on May 26, 1919, he resided at Killdeer where he worked as a freelance photographer. Known in North Dakota as the Cowboy Photographer, he began his career studying art at a Chicago school. In recent years he made a specialty of scenic and wildlife photography and sold many of his pictures and stories to national magazines.
