Biographical Sketch

Ernest A. (Swede) Lewis, 85, Dawson postmaster fr4om 1940 to 1965, died Thursday, April 30 in a Bismarck hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4 at the United Church of Christ in Dawson, with military rites by the Dawson American Legion Post.
The Rev. Virgil Allard officiated. Pallbearers were Roy Wollschlaeger, Harold Stein, Ben Kinev, Henry Mueller, Frank Barnick and Tim White. The honorary pallbearers were Lee Markham, Fred Kemmet, Harry Olson, Fred Eberl, Paul Abbott and John Kemmet.
He was born March 12, 1896 at Grove City, Minn. to Mr. and Mrs. (Ellen) Nels Lewis and came to North Dakota in 1905, settling at Dawson. He was a World War I veteran who saw action in the battles at Argonne and Meuse. He was awarded the Silver Star. He married Rebecca Yetter Jan. 28, 1921 at Steele.
He leaves his wife; one daughter, Betty Schneckloth, Missoula, Mont.; two sons, Gerald, Steele, and Delmar, Langdon; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Abby Froelich, Spokane, Wash., and Esther McKellip, Faribault, Minn.
