Biographical Sketch: Hans Gilbert A. Rauk
Hans Gilbert A. Rauk was born on February 12, 1882 in Black Hammer, Minnesota to Asle Knudtsen (1852-1907) and Gunhild Hansdtr Stenbakken (1858-1883.) Rauk. His parents were immigrants from Norway whose native tongue was Norwegian. His mother passed away the year after he was born. He had two full siblings, Carolena Mathilde Rauk (1878-1908) and Carl Oliver Rauk (1880-1955). His father remarried (Julia Helena Dahlen (1866-1943) and had five more children: Minnie Bergett (1886-1969), Clara A. (1888-1966), Archibald Gerhard (1894-1958), Lillian Bernice (1896-1896), Viona Bernice (1897-1992). His father Asle passed away on April 7, 1907 in Forest City, Winnebago, Iowa. On February 20, 1905 Hans married Sophia Andersen of Houston, Minn. They lived on a farm about five miles northwest of Esmond in Benson County (N.D.). In 1920, he is listed as being the secretary of the Benson County Nonpartisans League. He served as the bill clerk for the North Dakota State Senate in 1929. He and his family farmed the land they lived on raising grain crops. After his death on December 25, 1942, his wife Sofia, operated a café in Esmond, but later moved to Devils Lake were she was employed at the hospital. She resided with her daughter, Vivian, in Moorhead for several years while still maintaining her home in Esmond. She died February 10, 1965.
Hans Gilbert A. Rauk Family
Hans Rauk of Spring Grove, Minn. came to Esmond in 1903. On February 20, 1905 he married Sophia Andersen of Houston, Minn. They lived on a farm about five miles northwest of Esmond. Six children were born. Archie passed away as a baby, and Gladys passed away at the age of 17. Evelyn attended college and began teaching in 1929. In 1932 she married Marvin Rice. They spent the next 23 years teaching. Evelyn spent 19 years at Dayton Power and Light as Clerk Analyst while Marvin was Management Supervisor of procurement at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Before Marvin’s retirement, he prepared himself for the ministry. At this time Marvin and Evelyn are giving full time to the work of the Lord. They are enjoying their retirement to the utmost. At present they are at Bradenton, Fla., where Marvin is assistant pastor of the United Brethren in Christ Church. Palmer, born May 12, 1912, is now living in North St. Paul, Minn. with his wife Margaret, and family of seven children, all in the music profession. Palmer retired from teaching in June of 1974 with a gift of a “Trip to Europe” from the North St. Paul community. He spent five years teaching in rural schools of North Dakota, four years at Herman, Minn.; served in the U.S. Army and 32 years as Band Director of North St. Paul. He is presently teaching organ, piano and directing the church choir. Vivian, born December 10, 1915, attended Moorhead State College and taught school for ten years in North Dakota and Minnesota. She then became Program Director of the European Theatre of War 1944-1946. Returning to the United States she married Donald Jacobson of Cooperstown. They live in Moorhead, Minn. where Donald is General Manager of “Twin City Construction Company” and Vivian is teaching music for the Moorhead Public School for her 28th year. They have 3 children: LeClaire, Lynelle and Lydell, all majoring in music and swimming. Helen Sylvia Rauk was born October 13, 1917, graduating from Esmond High School and Moorhead Teachers College. She taught in Fillmore and Sheyenne. In 1941 Helen married Carlyle Austinson of Fillmore. They lived in Esmond and Leeds where Mr. Austinson was associated with the bank and Mrs. Austinson was on the school faculty—teaching music and intermediate grades. In 1950 they moved to Northwood where they now reside. Mr. Austinson is Executive Vice President and Director of the North Dakota Banks Association. Carlyle was in the armed service in Texas prior to going to Leeds. Mrs. Austinson is active in the music work of the church and is also a private music teacher. They have two children: Sharon (Mrs. George Cobb) of Bakersfield, Calif. They have two sons, Darren and Brandon. Mr. Cobb is associated with the Bakersfield schools. Kent is married to Marlene Herder and resides in Brooklyn Park, Minn. He is a National Bank Examiner. Rauks moved to Esmond in 1925 to what was known as the Stenerson place. After his death in 1942, Mrs. Rauk operated a café in Esmond, later moved to Devils Lake were she was employed at the hospital. She resided with her daughter, Vivian, in Moorhead for several years while still maintaining her home in Esmond. She died in February of 1965.
