Abstract: Approximately 494 photographs of the Nicholas and Elvina Prinkey Rice family (Pettibone and Woodworth, ND area) which include images of 4-H, farming and agriculture, studio portraits and town scenes, dating from about 1900-1940. Approximately 100 World War I era photographs of Freemont Rice, a World War I soldier from Pettibone (ND) and son of Nicholas and Elvina Rice. Also included are several letters, farm receipts, and a 1957 special edition of the Fargo Forum that documents tornado damage in Fargo (ND).
Provenance: The collection was donated to the State Historical Society of North Dakota by Joan Kuhn, daughter of Dan and Ester Mariene Gowfe Rice, on behalf of her mother’s estate. Ester was the wife of Daniel Rice, son of Nicholas and Elvina.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Nicholas Rice was born in Hardin County, Iowa, February 27, 1857. He received his education there, and on December 25, 1878, he and Elvina Prinkey were married in Hardin County. Elvina was born May 22, 1861 in Ohio. They came to Marstonmoor Township (Stutsman County) from IA and lived there until Elvina’s death on January 4, 1941 and Nicholas’ death on December 2, 1946. Nicholas was a staunch member of the Farmers Union, had served many years on the Marston school and township boards.
They were the parents of 14 sons and daughters: Walter Alonzo, James Joseph, Clara Belle (Bellows), Caroline (Fitch), Maggie May (Amick-Hill), Myrta Mabel (Talley), Hattie Alice (Biersdorff), Effa Leo (Studebaker), Fremont Wesley, Dan, Florence Esther (Larson) and Vera (Newman). An infant son preceded his parents in death, as well as son Fremont, who died of pneumonia on October 17, 1918 en-route overseas in World War I. He enlisted June 14, 1918 and was sent overseas October 6, 1918. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
Dan Rice was born April 26, 1899 at Lost Island, IA. He farmed in the Pettibone area until retiring in 1969. On October 4, 1936, he married Esther Marie Gowfe. Esther was born on September 23, 1911 to Charlie and Catherine (Stahl) Goffe. Dane and Esther had two children: Nicholas and Joan.
