BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH, DOROTHY DE ST. CLEMENT
(COUNTESS DOROTES DE SAUTEIRON DE ST CLEMENT)
Dorothy Berry was born in Short Hills, New Jersey (on a farm) to A. B. and Annie Berry. When Dorothy was five years old, the family moved to Taylor (ND). There, they operated the Taylor Hotel, and subsequently ran a sheep ranch five miles northeast of Taylor. Dorothy attended the NDAC at Fargo and taught in a prairie school house in Stark County (ND).
Dorothy’s literary career started from childhood. She contributed stories and poems for local papers and for the Children’s Page of magazines. While at College she wrote articles for farm papers on Animal Husbandry and stock raising.
Dorothy Berry married an Italian nobleman from Rome, Italy, County Giulio de Sauteiron de St. Clement, who became a naturalized citizen. He was connected with the Italian Steamship Lines in New York and Chicago.
Dorothy lived in Rome, Italy, from 1921-1938 and visited the U.S. every two years for a short stay and to retain citizenship.
She started writing for Italian newspapers about the United States. She had a syndicated column, “Travel Talks,” in La Tribuna d’Italia (The Italian Tribune), which discussed her travels around the continent.
She also contributed short stories to Progress Magazine, a Unity Publication of Kansas City (MO) and sold short stories to “Porto Rico Illustrado,” San Juan, Porto Rico (the stories were translated in Spanish). Dorothy was a free-lancing writer of stories, articles and poetry and in 1951 her first book White Gumbo was published by Vanfage Press.
