Biographical Sketch

    Funeral Services were held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the United Methodist  Church for Kenmare’s oldest businessman, Edward H. Gross, 91, optometrist and  jeweler, who died Tuesday, July 6th in the Kenmare hospital where he  had been a patient for several weeks.
Rev. Kenneth Farr officiated and burial was in Lakeview Cemetery. Pallbearers were E. H. Miller, Emmanuel Mortenson, J. V. McBride, Robert Gehring, Robert Mahnke and Dave Anderson.
Mr. Gross moved to Kenmare in March 1902 and continued as an optometrist and jeweler until last January,
He resided in their home on Central Avenue from 1902 when it was erected until April 1971, when he became hospitalized.
Born Nov. 8, 1879 in Shakopee, Minn., he attended the Millard School of Optics, Litchfield, Minn., and was graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry and Optics in Chicago.
He learned watchmaking and the jewelry trade at Shakopee. At Kenmare he purchased a building in 1913, operating his own jewelry store for 34 years. In 1947 he sold the business, but continued to work for the owner as a jeweler.
On Sept. 3, 1903, he married Irene Heath, at Spencer, Wisc. She died in September 1970.
Mr. Gross served as Kenmare city treasurer at one time and was vice president of the Dakota-Montana Oil Co., Shelby, Mont. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Fire Department and Commercial Club in Kenmare.
He was a charter member of the Kenmare Country Club and a member of the North Dakota Optometric Association and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. His hobby was photography. Many of his pictures have been published in the North Dakota Outdoors magazine.
Surviving are a son, H. E. Gross, Kenmare; two grandchildren, Robert Gross of Norfolk, Neb. and Richard Gross, Las Vegas; three great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Anna Swanson, Cheney, Wash. A son Robert passed away in 1936.
