(Reprinted from Montebello, CA, Messenger)

William Desere Odou, D.V.M. was born July 13, 1889 at St. Onge, South Dakota, and passed away September 7th at his home in Montebello.

He was graduated from Creighton University, Pharmacy School, Omaha, Nebraska at age 17 and from Chicago Veterinary School in 1918. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was sent to France and served.

After the end of the war, he remained in Paris in charge of the animals that participated in the U.S. – Allied Games along with the Arabian riding horses. (The Odou’s first son James was born while they were in France).

After his return to the United States, Dr. and Mrs. Odou operated a pharmacy at McLaughlin, South Dakota on the Sioux Indian Reservation where he was also a Veterinarian. Later, they moved to Hettinger, North Dakota where their two other sons, Dr. Eugene Odou and Dr. Bruce Odou were born.

In Hettinger, Dr. Odou started the first airport and was one of aviation’s early pilots.

Moving to Montebello in 1936, he began his practice of Veterinary medicine, until he retired from practice in 1978.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mathilda; three sons, eleven grandchildren and four great grand children; as well as a host of friends.”
