AGENCY SKETCH - Camp Grassick - a summer camp for children
The idea for a children's summer camp in North Dakota originated with the North Dakota Anti-Tuberculosis Association, who in 1928 purchased land and cabins alongside Lake Isabel with funds raised through the sale of Christmas Seals. Named in honor of a pioneer physician in the state, Camp Grassick was established to provide wholesome outdoor living for undernourished children, with the purpose of supplementing the work of the Sanatorium at San Haven by a preventative program. Many of the first campers were patients at San Haven. Helen Katen, executive secretary of the Association, was camp director.
Then, as now, private organizations and individuals contributed generously to the camp. The Elks Lodge of Bismarck, the Masonic Grand Lodge, and the A.O.U.W. Grand Lodge each donated a cabin to the Anti-Tuberculosis Association. The Northern Pacific Railway contributed a mail car cabin, and the late Dr. Fannie Dunn Quain donated a four-bed infirmary. Other contributions included physiotherapy equipment from the Elks Lodge of Mandan.
Having pointed up the need for a summer camp for children and demonstrated the practicality of such a camp, the North Dakota Anti-Tuberculosis Association shifted its emphasis to other projects, and in 1947 sold Camp Grassick to the North Dakota State Elks Association. Under the ownership and maintenance of the Elks, Camp Grassick, by special agreement, has been operated by the State Public Welfare Board and has continued as a children's camp.
