Abstract: Consists of genealogical information about the Girard, Loving, Tuttle, Barnes, and Parks families, a history of the Cray home in Mankato (Minn.), a history of the 9th Minnesota regiment, diplomas, graduation programs and certificates of Bernard Alfred and Helen (Parks) Girard, newspaper clippings about Girard, particularly about his World War II service, and photographs of Girard during World War II, including images in Japan.
Bernard Alfred Girard was born in Granada, Minnesota, USA on April 17, 1904 to Alfred A. (1882-1940) and Isabella Girard (1882-1938). Bernard also had a brother, Merle (1910-1992), and two sisters, Beryl (1917-2008) and Persis (1919-2011). Bernard married Helen Guinevere Parks (1902-1999), and together they had two children, Scott (b. 1932) and Ferol LaRae (b. 1936). Bernard passed away on March 17, 1982 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Helen’s parents’ names were Lauren Elmer Parks and Ira R. Amidon Parks.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
War history of Bernard Alfred Girard. Ph.m.2-s. US Navy.
July 1944 to December 15. 1945.

Bernard Alfred Girard (BA), science teacher and principal of Williston High School, enlisted in the Navy July, 1944 after being rejected by the Selective Service Commission 8 times because of his age (39). He was trained as a Pharmacist Mate (medical corps) at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. His final orders were to report to the Advance Base at San Bruno, California. In April 1945 he sailed on the USS Wharton for duty with the Military Government Medical Facilities in the Southwest Pacific for the Marine Invasion of Okinawa, the last step before the invasion of Japan to end the war.
After 40 days at sea the Wharton with the invasion armada arrived off Okinawa. After intense bombardment of the island, orders were given for the troops to invade. In spite of his age, he was able to scramble down the sides of his ship on its cargo netting and join marines on an amphibious landing craft. The marines were trapped on the beach through the night; all the while BA and his shipmates treated the casualties as best they could. Casualties were loaded onto the Wharton. After heavy fighting, the marines were able to gain enough ground for Bernard and his shipmates to establish a medical camp at Kushi, which was later found to be behind enemy lines. The unit was nicknamed "Lawson's Raiders". They treated all marine casualties, Okinawan civilians, including women and children, attended births of babies and an occasional Japanese soldier.
He was honorably discharged December 15, 1945 in Minneapolis and caught the next train home to Williston to join his family in time for Christmas. Bernard immediately applied to re-enter UND School of Medicine [he had to leave medical school during the depression due to lack of funds], graduating in 1948 and received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1950. After completing his internship he and his family returned home to North Dakota where he practiced medicine in Mohall, Beulah and finally Mandan where he worked until his retirement.
