SCOPE AND CONTENT
The North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party Records date from 1906-2009 and occupy 37.75 cubic feet. The records are divided into eighteen Series: Party Structure; Committees; Subject Files: Elections, Campaigns, Politics, Conventions; Individual Files: A-Z; District files: 1-49; ND Democratic-NPL Women Files; Democratic Legislative Spouses Files; Kennedy Foundation Files; Kennedy Memorial Center Files; Financial Material; Activities; Scrapbooks; News Releases; Newsletters; Guest books; Printed Material; Photographic Material; and Audio/Video Recordings.
Series I, Party Structure, consists of the party’s by-laws, with amendments, 1974-1975, and a listing of party officers and executive committee members, 1999. Series I contains amendments from 1974-1975, made to the original by-laws (1972), but subsequent amendments are missing, rendering the Series incomplete.
Series II, Committees, 1972-2004, contains a variety of material from several of the committees of the Democratic-NPL party. The Series is missing the records of at least two committees, the Review Policy Committee and the Combination Committee. The years 1972-1976 are documented fairly well across most Committees (Budget, By-laws, Platform, Policy, and Search), but the Executive Committee material dates only from 2004. The Series contains the most material from the Platform Committee, and the process of creating the 1972 Democratic-NPL Party platform is fairly well documented, but material from every other year is missing.
Series III, Subject files: Elections, Campaigns, Politics, Conventions, dates from 1906-2004. Each file covers at least one of the subjects of elections, campaigns, politics, and conventions, and each includes different types of material. The entire Series is comprised of the following types of material: platforms, news clippings, notes, publications, printed material, and financial records. Some files contain much more information than others. There are chronological gaps in the series, as the years 1907-1943 are missing, as are 1961, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979-1982, 1986-1987, 1989-1991, 1993-1995, and 1997-2003. Records from 1972, 1974 and 1976 are the most extensive. The Series is valuable to researchers interested in comparing elections by year, learning about the mechanics of ND State Conventions, or following the political happenings of a given year. The Legislatures of 1983 and 1985 are fairly well documented as well.
Series IV, Individual Files: A-Z, includes material of and about Democratic-NPL politicians, party members and candidates, 1950-2009. Individuals with less material were combined into folders that are arranged alphabetically by last name. Several individuals each have their own file. Each file contains at least one of the following types of material: correspondence, news clippings, speeches, printed material, biographical information, Christmas cards, newsletters, news releases, post cards, publications, programs, reports, and election and campaign material.
While most of the individuals included in this series are North Dakota figures, the files also include several national and international people. Notable individuals in the Series include: Mark Andrews, Usher and Quentin Burdick, President Jimmy Carter, Walter Christensen, Winston Churchill, Kent Conrad, President William Clinton, the Marquis DeMores, Byron Dorgan, John Edwards, Geraldine Ferraro, George Gaukler, Agnes Geelan, Barry Goldwater, Governor William (Bill) Guy, Brynhild Haughland, Heidi Heitkamp, Hubert H. Humphrey, Elvira Jestrab, President Lyndon B. Johnson, President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, William (Bill) Langer, Governor Art Link, Walter Mondale, President Richard Nixon, Earl Pomeroy, Rolland Redlin, Wayne Sanstead, Sarah Vogel, and Milton R. Young. The Series is of considerable research potential, as it documents the evolution of election and campaign material in the second half of the twentieth century.
Series V, District files: 1-49, is comprised of correspondence, memoranda, members’ mailing lists, workshop and activity information, form letters, press releases, business listings, district convention material, printed material, news clippings and publications, organized by district number. The Series is fairly limited in scope, as it covers only the years 1975-1976. At the same time, the activities of each district during this period are well documented.
Series XVII, Photographic Material, 1930-2004, contains photographs of individuals, party events, campaigns, and the legislature, with the original order within each box retained. This Series is by far the most extensive of the collection, with 11,610 images. The first two Subseries, Photographic Prints and Photographic Negatives, form the bulk of the Series and the third Subseries, Slides, consists of only 27 images. The 1980s is the decade recorded most in this Series. There are gaps in the Series, with only a single photograph from the 1940s-mid 1950s. Important people and topics covered in this Series are numerous, and include: Presidents, Vice Presidents, Governors, Congressmen, Senators, First Ladies, Democratic-NPL candidates, the construction and dedication of the Kennedy Center, Kennedy Center staff, state conventions, activities, parades, campaigns, legislators and legislative sessions, meetings, banquets, rallies, and businesses. Most of the images are in ND, and are of ND candidates and politicians, although the Series also includes national figures. The majority of the images are in good to excellent condition.
