BOX/FOLDER INVENTORY

Box 1:
1 Photograph, slide, and film descriptions
2 Slides - Lauchhammer Mining Wheel at work at the Glenharold Mine, aerials of Glenharold, and reclamation on reclaimed land (20 slides), 1966
3 DVDs: Western States Water and Power Consumers Conference (1963) - A news styled report on this conference held in Bismarck, North Dakota. Fred Simonton, Midwest Electric Consumers Association, narrates the film with speakers including, Vice President and Presidential candidate Hubert H. Humphrey; South Dakota Senator George McGovern; Assistant Secretary of the Interior - Water and Power Kenneth Holum; North Dakota Senator Quentin Burdick. The conference talks about the development of the Missouri River Basin to produce hydroelectric power for the rural communities.

“Power for the Plains” (1973) - Produced by Basin Electric - ongoing story of how Great Plains leaders have cooperatively developed rural electrification for their region over a period spanning nearly 40 years. Plains leaders in the Depression years lent the cooperative idea to their plans for rural electric power, forming distribution cooperatives with hopes of someday lighting the countryside. Beyond this they saw rural electrification as the means for dramatically transforming the economy and quality of rural life on the Plains. It tells of the coming of giant Missouri River dams which would produce abundant supplies of low-cost hydroelectric power to electrify the farms. And it relates how rural electric leaders successfully overcame distribution problems by forming area generation and transmission cooperatives (G & Ts) to deliver the hydroelectric power from the Federal transmission grid to individual cooperatives over a vast and sparsely settled region. How rural electric people moved together and met this challenge in the early 1960s is told through the organization of Basin electric Power Cooperative which built in North Dakota the largest lignite burning thermal generating plant in the Western Hemisphere when it went into commercial operation in 1966. The era of long range power planning for the Missouri Basin had begun. And here was visible proof that large-scale thermal generation could be successfully integrated with the region’s hydroelectric system with resulting benefits and economies flowing to Missouri Basin customers.

“Energy from the Plains” (1976) - The Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline Company produced this film about building a gasification plant in the Beulah area using North Dakota lignite. Footage shows the town of Beulah, lignite being mined at the Westmoreland Corporation mine near Beulah, rolling prairie. Shows a train load of lignite being shipped over to South Africa to do a test burn at the Sasol gasification plant to see if North Dakota lignite would produce high quality natural gas
4 11040-01 Glenharold Mine, near Stanton, N.D. - the Lauchhammer Mining wheel was used to mine coal at the Glenharold mine. The 10-story high machine would strip-mine lignite for use at the Leland Olds Station and was operated by the Truax-Traer Company )later sold to Consolidation Coal Company also known as Consol), coal supplier to the Basin Electric Leland Olds Station. The wheel could mine three million tons of coal a year, is run by a 3,500 horse-power electric motor and mounted on six caterpillar tractor units attached in pairs and is as long as a football field. The wheel was used at Glenharold from May 1965 until September 1968 when it was replaced by a dragline, 1966 (photographic print) (Basin Electric Power Cooperative [BEPC] ID number 1A)
