Biographical Sketch
From the Grand Forks Herald, April 20, 1970
Brig. Gen. Leroy A. Landom, 61, Bismarck, retired assistant adjutant general of the North Dakota National Guard, died Sunday at a local hospital. He had been hospitalized since April 3. Gen. Landom was a native of Grand Forks. Funeral services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Bismarck. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis.
Gen. Landom was born Jan. 12, 1909 in Grand Forks. He grew up here and was educated at Grand Forks Central High School and the University of North Dakota. He enlisted in the National Guard in Grand Forks in 1923 as a private. He was commissioned as an officer in 1937.
Gen. Landom left Grand Forks with officers of the 188th Field Artillery in March 1941, after being mobilized for one year’s training. With the United States entry into World War II, Gen. Landom served overseas in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. Following the end of the war, Gen. Landom returned to Grand Forks after having served for a brief period at the national selective service headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Gen. Landom was then named U.S. Property & Fiscal Officer of the North Dakota National Guard at Bismarck. He was promoted a number of times while at Bismarck and in 1968 retired as assistant adjutant general of the state National Guard. Gov. William L. Guy presented Gen. Landom with the Distinguished Service Medal of North Dakota on his retirement. He had served 42 years with the Army and National Guard.
Gen. Landom married the former Earliss Sands of Alvarado, Minn. On Oct. 9, 1937 at Alvarado. He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Bodies, the Shrine, and the Elks Lodge.
Surviving are his wife; one son, David Landom, Fargo, and one sister, Mrs. Irene Landom Shirley, Brainerd, Minn.
