Abstract: Consists of Proceedings of the Board of Townsite Commissioners of the City of Bismarck and Bismarck City Council regarding claims to land lots within the original city. Also included is a register of town site claims and their disposition for the same dates and a listing of city officials. Barrett, the city clerk, created the books in 1891 from the original proceedings on file in the city clerk’s office.

Biographical Sketch
Edward H. Barrett was born to Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Barrett in Iowa in 1856. He came to Bismarck in 1880 with his parents. He was City Clerk for the City of Bismarck and also worked at Custer House, Western House, Grand Pacific, and Bismarck Hotels. He died in Bismarck on July 17, 1917.

1 Proceedings of the Board of Townsite Commissioners of the City of Bismarck 1876-1891, 1v. The purpose of the Commission was to hear and determine all claims to title and deeds for any portion of the tracts and parcels of land in the city.
2 Transcript of Several Actions of the Bismarck City Council regarding city lots in the original townsite, 1876-1885, 1v. The purpose of these meetings was to determine the respective rights of all claimants having any claims against any lots within the City of Bismarck and to file their claims with the Townsite Commissioners.
