BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
From the Hazen Star November 15, 2001
Robert L. Stroup, 86, of Hazen, died Tuesday Oct. 30, 2001, at Sakakwea Medical Center, Hazen. Services were held Saturday Nov. 3, 2001, at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Bill Wagner officiating. Burial followed in Hazen Cemetery.
Robert L. Stroup was born June 17, 1915, in Zap to Robert Martin and Margaret (Adams) Stroup. He grew up in Zap and graduated from high school in Hazen. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. And was elected to Pi Kappa Delta National Forensic Fraternity.
After college he worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Medora and Dickinson, buying land for the Little Missouri Grassland Area.
He married Lillian Pridt in 1939. Later that year he began managing Stanton Grain Company and also served on the Stanton School Board. In 1945 he moved to Hazen where he taught and coached at Hazen High School. In 1947 he bought Hazen Lumber Company and operated that until he sold it in 1973.
In 1965 he was elected to the North Dakota Senate, serving until 1976 and was often referred to as “Mr. Coal.” While a State Senator, he was the author of North Dakota’s first reclamation law and severance taxation legislation. This legislation was later adopted by many other states and the U.S. Congress. His interest in reclamation started when he lived in Zap and he and his brothers delivered newspapers and walked thorough unsightly spoil piles.
From 1974 to 1976 he was the Executive Director of the Mercer County Energy Development Board, actively involved in the rapidly expanding energy projects and research relating to coal-related innovation. In 1989 he received the Greater North Dakota Association’s Natural Resources Award.
He was an active member and officer of many businesses, civic, fraternal and political organizations over the years. He was involved in the creation of the Hazen Community Chest in 1976 and rewriting North Dakota’s Mechanics Lien Law in 1963. He served as President of the North Dakota Lumberman’s Association and the Northwest Lumberman’s Association. In 1976 he was the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. He was a charter member of the Hazen Memorial Hospital Association, which was instrumental in the building of the new hospital.
He was on the Board of the Union State Bank in Hazen for 10 years. He was Vice President and on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Security Bank in Washburn at the time of his death.
Lillian died in 1971. In 1974 he married Vi (Wickenheiser) Keller. He is survived by his wife Vi, Hazen; six children, Robyn (Edmund) Vinje, Fargo; Robert L. II (Coletta Albers), Fargo; M. James (La Vonne Schlender), Washburn; Larry (Kathy Strauss), Eden Prairie, Minn.; Thomas (Heather Pack), Great Falls, Va.; Elizabeth (Jerome) Menge, Bismarck; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Ron (Nancy Cramer) Keller, Minneapolis, Minn.; Don Keller, Columbus, Ohio; Kathy (Rich) Werner, Janesville, Wis.; and Dick (Nancy) Ricks, Edina, Minn.; 10 step-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne (Bernice) Garrison; one sister Margaret Jean (Betty) (Jim) Leet, Wilton, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Enid Stroup, Hazen; and Jean (Pridt) Rockne, Hazen; and Phoenix, Ariz.; and seven nieces and nephews.
