BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Compiled from research by Cathy A. Langemo, January 8, 2002

Robert A. Grant was born to Alexander and Ellen Grant on August 26, 1886 near Staples, Wadena County (MN). He had three brothers and five sisters. He attended Wadena (MN) public schools and graduated from Wadena High School. He studied bookkeeping and shorthand from Mankato Community College and graduated in 1908. On August 8, 1911, he married Ethel M. Burnett in Bottineau (ND). They had two children: Russel B., who was a physician in Hackensack (NJ) and Lee.

Robert Grant was a teacher in Minnesota public schools from 1905-1907. He moved to Fargo and worked as a supervisor of sales at J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company in about 1909. He joined the William H. Brown Company of Chicago as a salesman and town site agent for the NP Railway Company in Mott (ND). He was a partner and later owned a real estate business of Grant and Beeman Land Company. In summer months, he sold land in ND, and during the winter months, he lived in the southwestern U.S. where he sold irrigated land. In Hettinger County, he and Ethel owned land in Mott and Castle Rock townships, and owned sheep on shares with the New England Cooperative Wool Pool, through which he handled and sold wool produced in southwestern North Dakota.

Grant served as the county and state director of the Greater ND Association for over 30 years; was an officer of the Mott Production Credit Association; member of the ND Stockmen’s Association; Secretary-treasurer for the New England Cooperative Wool Pool; member of the board of trustees of the Methodist Church; charter member and officer of the Mott Commercial Club; charter member of the Mott Lions Club; and was active in the Masonic lodge. He was interested in hunting, fishing and traveling. Robert Grant died May 16, 1963 in Mott (ND) and is buried in the Mott Sunnyslope Cemetery.  Ethel Grant passed away January 10, 1977.
