BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Larry Rowan Remele was born to Leonard and Esther Remele on April 22, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. He, along with two sisters, Ruthann and Shelly, was raised in Valley City where he graduated with honors from high school in 1962. He attended Valley City State University and in 1967 received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from North Dakota State University. In 1969 he received a master’s degree in American History and Literature from the University of North Dakota. He taught at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb where he also did some post graduate work. Remele also taught at the University of North Dakota and Minnesota Technical College in Crookston.
In the spring of 1973 Larry Remele began work as the first historian/editor of the quarterly, North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains and the State Historical Society newsletter, Plains Talk. Until this time no one had been able to dedicate a large portion of their time to editing the journal. The Summer 1974 volume stated that Remele had produced nine issues of the behind schedule journal in a ten month period, getting it back on track. Remele was appointed Director of the State Historical Society’s Education and Interpretation Division in 1985.
During the period he served as editor, 1973-1988, Remele authored 12 articles. His research areas of special emphasis were the Nonpartisan League and political movements among farmers, but his interests went far beyond that. He was widely recognized as an important scholar of Northern Plains history. He edited a series of biographies of prominent North Dakotans in 1986, authored numerous scholarly articles and wrote: Fort Buford and the Military Frontier on the Northern Plains, 1850-1900, Fort Totten Military Post and Indian School, 1867-1959, The Lost Years of A. C. Townley (after the Nonpartisan League), The Modern Period of North Dakota: A Time of Change, The North Dakota State Capitol: Architecture and History, The Public Reaction to the North Dakota Farmers’ Holiday Association, and wrote the introductions for reissues of Political Prairie Fire: the Nonpartisan League, 1915-1922 and the reissued Lewis and Clark in North Dakota in 1988. Historians, filmmakers, and journalists came to him for background information on their Northern Plains projects, such as the documentary film, Northern Lights. Remele presented papers on a wide variety of topics, was a consultant, and wrote many grants. He was active in the Democratic-NPL Party.
Larry Remele married Ann M. Rathke on April 18, 1982 in Mandan. They had one child, Rachel Dakota.
The Northern Great Plains History Conference established the The Larry Remele Award to honor his memory. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the betterment of the conference. Remele worked energetically to promote and enhance the conference and was serving as council chair at the time of his unexpected death at age 43 on June 3, 1988.
