HISTORICAL SKETCH
Originally known as the Board of Trade, the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce was organized as an official Chamber in 1930. C. W. Bitner served as its first president. The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce was formed, as stated in its bylaws, to "promote the civic, economic and social welfare of the city of Jamestown and vicinity."
Over the years the Chamber has organized and/or supported a number of projects and special events designed to fulfill the organization's objective. The Chamber's Agriculture Committee helped to make the first (1947) State Dairy Show, a dairy cattle show hosted for many years by the Stutsman County Fair, a success. Commissioned by the City of Jamestown and its Chamber of Commerce ca. 1959, Elmer Petersen erected the "World's Largest Buffalo" within city limits on a hill approximately 300 yards north of Interstate Highway 94. The idea for the 46 foot by 26 foot, 60 ton structure, originated in the Chamber's Tourist Promotion Committee. The buffalo was designed not only to serve as a tourist attraction for the city but also as a reminder of the vast herds of buffalo that once roamed the prairies of North Dakota. Another monument to the past, Pioneer Village, was made possible by the cooperation of a number of organizations, e.g. the Jamestown Historical and Tourist Promotion Corporation, the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce, the American Association of University Women, and the Jamestown Ministerial Association, as well as individuals. Dedicated to the early pioneers who believed enough in the future of North Dakota to spend their time and lives in its development, Pioneer Village planning began in 1965. The village consists of buildings representing various aspects of frontier life: Prairie School (Sinclair School No. 3), the first Northern Pacific Railroad Depot constructed in Jamestown, Salon of Art, Pioneer Church, log cabins, craft shops, trading post, sweet shops, newspaper shop, post office, jail, and amphitheater. One final example of Chamber activities is Jamestown's annual "Crazy Days" sidewalk sale, organized by the Chamber, ca. 1965, to promote business for local merchants.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce Records date from 1921 to 1983 and measure 36.25 feet. The collection documents administration, meetings, activities, programs, and projects undertaken by the Chamber. This collection contains three series: Series 1, minutes, 1927-1979, 1 ft.; Series 2, subject files, 1921-1983, 33 ft.; and Series 3, scrapbooks, 1932-1976, 2 ft. All three series are arranged chronologically; the subject files are arranged alphabetically within each year.
Series 1 consists of two kinds of minutes: Board of Directors minutes and Committee minutes. Board minutes are denoted by "Minutes" in the box/folder list. The minutes of the Agriculture, Airport, Annual Meeting, Athletic, City Beautification, Education, Fine Arts, Industrial Development, Local-County Governmental Affairs, Natural Resources, Public Relations, Retail, State and National Affairs, Tourism, and Transportation Committees are denoted by "Committee Minutes" in the box/folder list. Also found in this series are agenda, budgets, financial statements, memoranda, and meeting call sheets.
Series 2, Subject files, contains agenda, bylaws, calendars of events, correspondence, dockets, financial statements, minutes, news releases, newspaper clippings, questionnaires, reports, speeches, telegrams, and committee files for the Committees on Agriculture, Airport, Annual Meeting, Athletic, City Beautification, Education, Fine Arts, Industrial Development, Local-County Governmental Affairs, Natural Resources, Public Relations, Retail, State and National Affairs, Tourism, and Transportation. These files relate mainly to subjects of interest to the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and businesses and individuals considering relocating to Jamestown. Subjects include business promotions, industrial development of the city and surrounding area, Chamber membership, Pioneer Village, tourism, Jamestown College, and the State Dairy Show.
Series 3 consists of eight scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings which document conventions and meetings held in Jamestown, and special events such as Franklin D. Roosevelt's visit in 1936. The scrapbooks also contain information on speaker engagements, new businesses opening in the city, positions held by the Chamber on controversial issues, general and special election results, draft lotteries for World War II, and activities of individuals from Jamestown, e.g. persons joining the military or elected to positions in area organizations. Where there are gaps in the numbering of the folders, those folders do not exist.

Following dozens of buggies and carriages are 250 antique automobiles arranged in their order of development. Overhead hang 13 historic flying machines and in another lane is displayed the rigs that came by Grandfather’s house, such as the Gypsy Wagon, horse drawn hearse, peddler’s cart and mail wagon. Also on display are street cars, fire fighting equipment, dozens of bicycles and motorcycles depicting man’s progress as the years went by.

It came from Franklin County. The evolution of fire fighting equipment is shown in the Fire House. In the old Depot, brought in from Lowell, Nebraska, are portions of seven floors, laid one on the other, worn out by homesteaders’ feet as the arrived in this new land. The huge Union Pacific Windmill that furnished water for steam locomotives came from Agate, Colorado.
