HISTORICAL SKETCH
There have been many Lutheran Churches in North Dakota since the mid-1800's. The Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, Icelanders, and Germans formed some of the early churches in the 1870's. Synods and churches were formed and then divided as the state's population increased. By 1949 most congregations belonged either to the American Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church, or United Evangelical Lutheran. In September of that year representatives from each met in Chicago to consider possibilities for union. A committee of six, the Joint Union Committee, was elected to outline steps toward a proposed merger. The years from 1950 to 1960 were crowded with meetings of the Joint Union, numerous sub-committees, boards, commissions, and auxiliaries. In 1960 the three churches merged into the American Lutheran Church. North Dakota churches at this time were divided into two districts: eastern and western and all official business closed as of December 31, 1960.
The Constituting Convention of the Eastern North Dakota District of the American Lutheran Church was held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown on January 29, 1960. According to the bylaws, the Eastern North Dakota District consisted of the counties east of and including Rolette, Pierce, Wells, Stutsman, LaMoure, and Dickey, with the office of the President established at Fargo, North Dakota. The specific purpose of the Eastern District was to aid and support its congregations in the proclamation and propagation of the Christian faith among people and provide inspiration and leadership for its congregations in accomplishing the work assigned to them by the Lord of the Church.
The first convention of the Eastern District was held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City, North Dakota, June 13-15, 1961. Elected officers were: Rev. L. E. Tallakson, Fargo, president; Rev. S. Wegenast, Fargo, vice-president; Rev. Orland Fishe, New Rockford, secretary; and Rev. Albert Schilling, Valley City, treasurer. It was one of 19 districts in the Synod and was made up of 4 conferences: Devils Lake, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Jamestown. Four new conferences were added later: Grafton, Harvey, Lisbon, and Mayville. The Eastern District in 1961 had 304 congregations, a baptized membership of 94,271, and a confirmed membership of 63,287. There were 126 parish pastors and 9 serving as associate pastors. In comparison, in 1984 there were 283 congregations, a baptized membership of 96,869, a confirmed membership of 73,315, and 153 parish and 23 associate pastors.
The Eastern District congregations supported such service programs within the American Lutheran Church as ministry to minorities, House of Mercy, Bible camps for youth, Lutheran Social Service, campus ministry, Oak Grove Lutheran High School, CHARIS, rural ministries, nursing homes, resource center, and foreign missions. The Eastern North Dakota District served as a working unit of the American Lutheran Church in supervision of clergy and congregations for the purpose of planning, promoting, and implementing the mission of the church.
