HISTORICAL SKETCH

The history of the North Dakota Medical Association begins in 1881 with the organization, mainly through the efforts of Doctors C. S. Pine and H. G. C. Rose of Milbank, of a territorial medical association. The territorial association held its first meeting at Milbank in 1882. There the constitution and bylaws were adopted and officers were elected: A. B. Glumphy of Yankton, president; H. G. C. Rose of Milbank, secretary; and C. S. Pine of Milbank, treasurer. In 1885 a new constitution and bylaws were adopted and measures taken to incorporate the association.

Two years later in 1887 a temporary organization, which would later become the North Dakota Medical Association, was created at Larimore. Dr. J. G. Millspaugh, recognized as the ‘father’ of the association and of organized medicine in North Dakota, was responsible for this preliminary meeting. The consensus was for organization of the profession. A constitution and bylaws were drafted the following year at a meeting in Grand Forks, Dr. Millspaugh presiding. At a subsequent meeting at Larimore in 1889 the constitution and bylaws were adopted. Officers of the newly created North Dakota State Medical Association were J. G. Millspaugh, president; J. E. Engstad, secretary; and A. P. Rounsevell, treasurer. Also during 1889 the territorial medical association became the South Dakota Medical Society.

Over the years the North Dakota  Medical Association’s membership has grown and its activities expanded. A number of standing and special committees were formed in response to various concerns and situations. Committees have included: bar association liaison, Blue Cross/Blue Shield liaison, board of administration liaison, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, constitution and bylaws, crippled children, dental association liaison. Diabetes, displaced physicians, emergency medical services, fractures, geriatrics/aging and rehabilitation, Governor’s health planning, grievance, hospital association liaison, industrial health interprofessional relations, liability insurance, maternal and child welfare, Medical Center advisory, medical economy, medical education, mental health/hygiene, necrology and medical history, nominating, nursing education, official publication, pharmaceutical association liaison, pharmacy, pneumonia control, prepayment medical care, public health, public information liaison, public policy and legislation, public relations, resolutions, rural health, rural school health, scientific program, tuberculosis, venereal disease, veterans medical service, welfare board advisory, and women’s auxiliary liaison. The North Dakota State Medical Association was also involved in the North Dakota regional Medical Program during the 1960s and 1970s.

Also indicative of the diverse progress made within the association is the number of special societies and organizations that have operated, at least initially, within the North Dakota State Medical Association. These special organizations evidenced the trend toward specialization in the field of medicine and included: the academy of Opthamology and Otolaryngology, formed at the Grand Forks state meeting in 1919; the North Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, also organized in 1919; the North Dakota Cancer Society, formed in 1938; the North Dakota Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, formed at a Bismarck meeting in 1939; the North Dakota Academy of Radiology, organized in 1946; the North Dakota Chapter of the American College of Physicians, its inaugural meeting in Bismarck in 1947; the North Dakota Academy of Pediatricians, which disbanded after a brief period of activity in the late 1940s; the North Dakota Diabetes Association, incorporated in 1950; the Academy of General Practitioners; and the North Dakota Heart Association, formed at a meeting in 1955 at Fargo. Another important part of the Association is the Women’s Auxiliary to the North Dakota State Medical Association, organized at the 1947 meeting in Fargo.

The name of the association was changed in the late 1960s or early 1970s to the North Dakota Medical Association. The association is currently headquartered in Bismarck.
