SERIES DESCRIPTION

The North Dakota Republican Party Records consist of seven records series: State Convention Files, Correspondence, Legislative Candidates Files, Republican National Committee Files, Election Data, Miscellaneous Files, and Campaign Materials.

The State Convention Files date from 1959-1979, occupy two and a half feet, and are arranged chronologically. The files consist of convention proceedings and minutes (Republican State Central Committee, Republican Congressional Nominating Committee, staff meetings, regional meetings, and the Executive, Research, Publicity, Finance, and Organization Committees), agenda, by-laws, correspondence, notes, memoranda, budgets, news releases, schedules, rosters of delegates and candidates, endorsements, press conference statements, campaign materials, financial reports, registration forms, invoices, programs, newsletters, biographical sketches of candidates and delegates, seating charts, and party platforms. Most of the files document planning, arrangements, and proceedings of state conventions. Elements of the files deal with other subjects and activities not related to the state convention, including political rallies, administration, public relations, public issues, campaign strategies, and fundraising.

The Correspondence Files, 1968-1982, occupy one half foot and are arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The files document relations between the North Dakota Republican Party and various state or federal candidates and office holders. The files consist of letters, newsletters, notes, campaign materials, telegrams, newspaper clippings, biographical sketches of candidates and office holders, news releases, memoranda, and speeches relating primarily to political campaigns, public issues, and legislation.

The Legislative Candidates Files, 1972-1981, occupy one half foot, and are arranged chronologically. The files consist of correspondence, reports, directories, biographical sketches of candidates, news releases, notes, and memoranda. They document relations between the Party and candidates and office holders in the North Dakota Legislature and executive branch, as well as provide information concerning public issues, campaign strategies, and legislation.

The Republican National Committee Files, 1968-1979, occupy one half foot, and are arranged chronologically. The files document relations between the North Dakota Republican Party and the Republican National Committee and consist of correspondence, news releases, reports, memoranda, campaign materials, rosters, and party platforms. Most of the material deals with the selection of Republican National Committee delegates and political strategy.

Election Data, 1966-1980, measures one half foot, and is arranged chronologically. The data relates to analysis of the Republican voting record in the North Dakota Legislature and measuring Republican support on the local level. The files contain vote tabulations, reports, correspondence, budgets, and campaign plans.

The Miscellaneous Files, 1966-1982, are arranged by series. They include minutes, 1973-1980 (of various committees), New Voter Committee File, 1971-1972 (correspondence, memoranda, notes, news releases, and reports documenting the Committee’s efforts to recruit first time voters as Republican supporters), Get Out the Vote File, 1968-1976 (correspondence, memoranda, rosters, and notes documenting activities relating to voter registration and Republican support on the local level), and Republican Regional Workshop Files, 1969 (correspondence, rosters, agenda, registration materials, and minutes relating to political workshops concentrating on organization, public relations, and finance). Other materials include a scrapbook, Chairman’s procedure manual, Governor’s Club stationary, and a manuscript by Joseph C. Crawford, Upward Bound: The 1966 Republican Campaign in North Dakota, 1967.

Republican Campaign Materials, ca. 1970s-1980s, occupy one foot and are arranged by medium. This series consists of political posters, leaflets and brochures, bumper stickers, buttons, recorded political advertisements (audio and video cassettes) from the 1982 state and federal elections, and two slide trays containing 35mm slides from a 1972 Nixon re-election presentation.
