HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Bismarck Commercial Club was the original name of the chamber, incorporated on January 3, 1906. A Board of Trade in the 1870's preceded the Commercial Club, but the club was the first permanent organization. Fred L. Conklin was really the first secretary at a salary of $50.00 a month, which had to cover office rent, equipment, and operating expenses. Dues were $25.00 per year and the first meeting rooms were on the second floor of the Patterson building. Among the early members of the Bismarck Commercial Club were: John Yegen, Charles Wachter, A. W. Lucas, Oscar Will, F. H. Register, Dr. E. P. Quain, and Dr. N. O. Ramstad.
On November 15, 1923, the name was changed from the Bismarck Commercial Club to the Bismarck Association of Commerce. It was reorganized and renamed the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce on June 19, 1954 and on August 3, 1976 another change was made to the Bismarck Area Chamber of Commerce.
More than 20 committees within the chamber work with and through numerous agencies and organizations to accomplish their objectives. The Agricultural Committee serves as a direct link between the business community and rural areas. Their Convention and Visitor Bureau Committee invites groups to utilize the excellent facilities located in Bismarck. Besides encouraging economic education programs such as bond issues, the Education Committee encourages cultural affairs. The Highway and Transportation Committee concentrate on the improvement of streets, highways, traffic flow, and other transportation improvements both in the city and the areas around Bismarck. Attracting new members to the Chamber through the annual membership drive is the main concern of the Membership Committee. Brochures, post cards, maps, and visitor directories publicizing the advantages of Bismarck is the prime responsibility of the
Publicity and Promotions Committee. The Retail Committee coordinates retail activities through the various shopping areas of the city.
The Bismarck Area Chamber of Commerce has sponsored or assisted in a variety of activities over the years, e.g. band days, feed show and calf sales, basketball tournaments, beautification awards, centennial forest and tree plantings, farm-city mixers, Miss America and Miss North Dakota pageants, welcome teacher breakfasts, conservation awards, agri-business days, YMCA, McDowell Dam, Sibley Island, Von Bismarck Days, and the Oktoberfest.
