BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Alexander C. Burr was born March 21, 1901 in Bottineau, ND to Alexander G. and Roberta Carothers Burr. His father, Alexander G. Burr, served as State's Attorney of Bottineau County from 1894 to 1902 and was elected district judge in 1908. He served as district judge until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1926 where he remained until his retirement in 1949.
Alexander C. Burr graduated from Rugby High School and Jamestown College in 1920. He earned a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, taught at the College of the City of Detroit for four years, and from 1929 to 1934 headed the Department of Chemical Engineering Practice at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In North Dakota he was Dean of Faculty and Vice-President of Jamestown College from 1938 to 1942. He received an honorary doctorate from Jamestown College in 1956.
Burr was an organizer and first president of the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, research director of the North Dakota Research Foundation, and a charter member and first president of the Easter Seal Society of North Dakota. As a churchman of the United Presbyterian Church, he served six years on the National Commission on Evangelism, and served as a church elder for more than 50 years. In his late 1960s, he and his wife, Lillie, went to Thailand as fraternal workers for the church, spending four years there.
Alexander C. Burr worked with the U. S. Bureau of Mines in designing and building the bureau's Lignite Research Laboratory at Grand Forks. He headed the laboratory's Division of Fuels Technology for a time, studying fuel problems for a seven state Midwest area. He felt North Dakota's solid fuels resources offered great potential for development. Lignite resources were the greatest of any state and important not only as a source of heat, but a raw material for synthetic chemical industries. He wrote many articles and papers on lignite such as: "Lignite in North Dakota", "North Dakota Lignite and Synthetic Fuels", "Sulphur in North Dakota Lignite", "The Future of Lignite", "The Place of Lignite as a Fuel for the Middle West", "Gasification of Lignite in a Commercial Scale Pilot Plant", and "Lignite Fuel Burning Power Plants".
Burr did not limit his interest to lignite or fuels, but wrote on a variety of subjects, e.g. water and industrial development, dehydration of potatoes, manufacture of cement, degree days of heating and cooling, fertilizers, Garrison Diversion, geology surveys, oil and natural gas, pesticides, soybeans, sodium sulfate, turkeys, and uranium.
Alexander C. Burr married Lillie Fuller at Cavalier, June 22, 1926. They were the parents of three children: Alexander F., John P., and Patricia. He died August 30, 1977.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Alexander C. Burr Papers date from 1916 to 1980 with the bulk dating from 1941-1965, and measure 15 feet. This collection documents Alexander C. Burr's years as a college professor, a scientific researcher, and a religious leader. The collection consists of five file groups: scientific papers and North Dakota Research Foundation files, 9 ft.; education files, 1 1/4 ft.; religious files, 2 ½ ft.; personal papers, 1 1/2 ft.; and scrapbooks, 3/4 ft. Oversize material consists of architectural drawings, maps, and mechanical drawings. Included in the architectural drawings are layouts of a cheese factory, and dehydration, extraction, and cull potato processing plants. Maps consist of lignite beds, Garrison Dam, Nesson anticline, White Lake settling pond area, and Indian tribes. Mechanical drawings include Type "R" cross-belt separator, Rock Wool project cupola, Crown Solvent oil extraction plant, and VSD vacuum pump.
The scientific papers and North Dakota Research Foundation files date from 1916 to 1979 and measure 9 ft. The scientific papers document Burr's belief that North Dakota's solid fuels resources had great potential for development. The papers consist of newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, and printed material. Included in the reports were studies on alcohol, cement, coal, energy, fertilizers, gases, lignite, potatoes, soybeans, and power plants. The scientific papers and North Dakota Research Foundation files are arranged alphabetically by keyword in boxes 1 to 9.
The education files measure 1 1/4 ft. and date from 1921 to 1972. The education files document Burr's teaching activities as an instructor at a number of colleges. Courses taught by Burr included chemistry, engineering, and physics. The education files consist of correspondence, printed materials, reports, and book lists. Included are reports on Jamestown College, North Dakota Agricultural College, University of North Dakota, Roberts College, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and Westminster College. The education files are in boxes 9 and 10 and are arranged alphabetically by keyword.
Religious files date from 1922 to 1980 and measure 2 ft. Burr's religious files document his interest and research on religious topics. The files consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed material, and reports. Topics researched by Burr include evangelism, communism, Christian teachings, and prayer in schools. Histories of Bottineau Church, Fargo-Oakes Presbytery, and the Presbyterian Synod of North Dakota are included in the papers. The religious files are arranged alphabetically by keyword in boxes 10 to 12.
Personal papers measure 1 1/2 ft. and date from 1916 to 1979. The papers document Burr's interest in diverse subjects, e.g. Abraham Lincoln, poetry, stock market, travel, politics, and the history of Dakota Territory. The papers consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, reports, manuscripts, verses, miscellaneous readings, biographies, and history of Dakota Territory. Burr's personal papers are in boxes 14 and 15, and are arranged alphabetically by keyword.
Scrapbooks date from 1930 to 1974 and measure 3/4 ft. The scrapbooks emphasize Burr's interest in lignite coal and prominent scientists. The scrapbooks consist of magazine and newspaper clippings, stamps, and photos. The scrapbooks are arranged alphabetically by keyword in box 15.
ORIGINAL ARRANGEMENT:
The Alexander C. Burr Papers were not organized into any type of filing system and there were many loose papers. Three-ring binders were used for storing part of the material along with some letter size manila folders. The majority of the documents were in good condition but a small portion was moldy and corroded by metal fasteners. These documents were surface cleaned before refoldering; forty-seven papers were so severely molded that they were photocopied and the originals destroyed. The Lignite Research Laboratory scrapbook includes many photos encased in a plastic cover which has adhered to the pictures. This scrapbook was retained with the collection.
