HISTORICAL SKETCH
The activities of various Christian churches on the northern plains played an important role in the social and religious history of the region. Among the many denominations and sects active in Dakota Territory and later North Dakota were several that would later comprise the North Dakota Conference of Churches. This conference was born out of a desire for ecumenical unity between diverse Christian beliefs. The dream for a "Christian front" did not materialize immediately nor without problems, but those believing in that dream welcomed its arrival with joy.
Early inter-church cooperation in Dakota Territory began in 1888 when the Dakota Sunday School Association began its ministry in what is today South Dakota. In 1890 the North Dakota Sunday School Association held its first conference in Grand Forks and drew over one hundred interested people. Leadership from Winnipeg and Minneapolis were also in attendance and helped found the organization. At the time of their first convention the North Dakota Sunday School Association represented 90 organized Sunday schools in 9 counties. The Association continued to operate into the twentieth century when it was reorganized and renamed.
In 1923 the North Dakota Sunday School Association was reorganized into the North Dakota Council of Religious Education; during the 1930s the organization came to be known as the North Dakota Council of Christian Education. It represented, in 1923, 19 denominations. This reorganization remained intact until another restructuring occurred in 1945. Renamed the North Dakota Interchurch Council, it served in an expanded capacity until the establishment of the North Dakota Council of Churches in 1959.
The founding of the North Dakota Conference of Churches, ca. 1971, was merely an evolutionary step from its predecessors. In the 1960s the changes in structure were profound. Under the leadership of Reverend Oscar Olsen, five ministry branches were administered. They included Christian Education, Christian Social Relations, Ecumenical Relations, Evangelical and Promotional, and the North Dakota Council of Church Women United. In turn, each of those groups were subdivided into specifically defined areas. The change in the infrastructure of the North Dakota Council of Churches was only a part of the overall metamorphosis the organization experienced.
In the decade of the 1960s there was a general awakening of social and political consciousness of which the North Dakota Council of Churches was a part. Prior to the 1960s the council and its antecedent organizations were not involved in politics. The rise and growth of the civil rights movement, the Supreme Court decision regarding prayer in school, and the Vietnam War helped push the council into the political world. The result was a veritable explosion of lobbying efforts and the publication of a multitude of brochures and other materials pertaining to church-related topics. An even more noticeable and certainly far-reaching change was underway at this time.
The influence of liberal theology and philosophy during the 1970s and 1980s was apparent in the National Council of Churches (NCC) as well as the North Dakota Conference of Churches. In the 1980s the emphasis on the social gospel, "liberation theology", and general support of liberal domestic and international policies caused the NCC to be the target of growing criticism. Ironically just as early twentieth century religious groups shunned politics, the NCC of the 1970s and 1980s embraced it. Although not as politically active as the National Council, the North Dakota Council of Churches nevertheless followed the lead of its larger national counterpart.
The North Dakota Conference of Churches continues to be active in a variety of secular and religious areas. Because it represents a wide range of religious beliefs, the Council is understandably in a position of neutrality on doctrinal statements. Nevertheless, the North Dakota Conference of Churches offers a strong and unified organization for its members in those areas where there is agreement.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The North Dakota Conference of Churches Records date from 1891 to 1982 and measure 11 feet. This collection documents the evolution of and activities pursued by the Conference to achieve its objective, which originally was to "...unite all Evangelical Christians and Sunday School workers through the state in earnest endeavor to promote the Sunday School cause".
The records of the North Dakota Conference of Churches are organized into seven series: Minutes, 1891-1974, 1 1/4 ft.; annual and financial reports, 1907-1973, 1/2 ft.; subject files, 1915-1982, 6 1/2 ft.; local county records, 1906-1959, 1/2 ft.; regional and county files, 1963-1981, 1/2 ft.; denominational files, 1955-1980, 1 1/4 ft.; financial records, 1947-1968, 1/2 ft.
Minutes date from 1891 to 1974 and measure 1 1/4 ft. This series contains minutes of the North Dakota Sunday School Association, North Dakota Council of Religious Education, North Dakota Council of Christian Education, North Dakota Interchurch Council, North Dakota Council of Churches, and the North Dakota Conference of Churches. Also found in this series are agenda, correspondence, dockets, and memoranda. The minutes are arranged chronologically.
Annual and financial reports measure 1/2 foot and date from 1907 to 1973. Contained in this series are annual reports presented at the annual meetings of the North Dakota Sunday School Association, North Dakota Council of Christian Education, North Dakota Interchurch Council, and North Dakota Council of Churches. Less extensive financial reports for the Sunday School Association, Council of Religious Education, and the Council of Churches are also included. The reports are arranged chronologically with annual reports preceding financial reports.
Subject files date from 1915 to 1982 and measure 6 1/2 ft. This series consists of applications, brochures, budgets, bylaws, clippings, constitutions, correspondence, invitations, memoranda, petitions, reports, speeches, and surveys. Included are files on Bible-reading campaigns, cooperative parishes, ecumenical trends, the history of the organization, and rural churches. Several oversize items, including two unidentified plats, two County Council Standard posters, a Constitutional Convention delegates poster, and two "Guide These Hands" posters, are also a part of this series. The subject files are arranged alphabetically by keyword with foldered material preceding the bound volume.
Local county records measure 1/2 ft. and date from 1906 to 1959. This series contains files and record books from seven county-level councils. Correspondence, minutes, reports, and records of receipts and disbursements are included in this series which focuses on efforts by these counties to promote ecumenism. The local county records are arranged alphabetically with foldered material preceding bound volumes.
Regional and county files measure 1/2 ft. and date from 1963 to 1981. Consisting of agenda, clippings, and correspondence, this series consists of a census of the churches in the eight regions and fifty-three counties of North Dakota. Rather than provide information on individual congregations in North Dakota, this series provides an overview of ecumenical activities from county to county and region to region. Also included in this series are two oversize posters announcing a dialog between farmers and businessmen entitled "Inter-Dependence in Rural America". Arrangement of the regional files is numeric while county files are arranged alphabetically by county name.
Denominational files date from 1955 to 1980 and measure 1 1/4 ft. Brochures, correspondence, memoranda, programs, and religious tracts are contained in this series. Included are files on Conference member as well as non-member churches such as the American Lutheran Church, the Baha'i of Bismarck, and the United Methodist Church. Arrangement of this series is alphabetical in name direct order.
Financial records measure 1/2 ft. and date from 1947 to 1968. This series consists solely of daybooks of the North Dakota Interchurch Council and the North Dakota Council of Churches. The daybooks record miscellaneous debits and credits as well as more specified transactions of the organization, e.g. individual contributions, refunds, books. This series is arranged chronologically.
