Biographical Sketch
Alfred Johnson was born to Nels and Betty Johnson in Moline (Ill.) October 11, 1887. The family lived for a time in Ash Lake (Minn.). Johnson moved to Page (N.D.) in 1911 and established a photography studio. He married Bessie E. Berry April 2, 1914. They had one child, Nanna Berry Barckley.
From “Our Page, 1882-1957”:
The April 12, 1912 issue of the Page Record reports two events among others: the sinking of the Titanic in the Atlantic and the opening of a photo studio her in Page by Alfred Johnson. The young man set up a studio in Roy Debing’s barber shop, and he survived for several weeks on bread and milk, till one day a lady came in for a two dollar sitting. More customers began coming after that. Then in summer came the big bonanza: the Italian crew working on the Surrey Cut-off. Johnson drove out to the diggings, in a rig hired at a reduced price. He found that relatives and friends among the men grouped around some acknowledged leader, and it became a matter of gaining his confidence. Each member of the group followed the example of the leader, ordering one, six or twelve duplicates of a photograph according to the amount ordered by the leader. Johnson developed thousands of pictures of these lonely workers, who sent them back to their families in areas they considered less forsaken by God and man. Mr. Johnson later equipped a studio in his own home. And Page is fortunate to have had his services all these years.
Alfred Johnson retired in 1964 and moved to Park Rapids (Minn.) to live with his daughter. His wife passed away in 1956. Johnson died May 28, 1968 and was buried in Page.
