Abstract: Photographs copied from the personal collection of Haral Christianson during his oral history interview in Driscoll (ND), Burleigh County. The interview is available on Oral History Tape #0169A & B.
Provenance: The North Dakota Oral History Project was undertaken by Larry Sprunk, with the cooperation of the North Dakota American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, the North Dakota Farmers Union, and the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The primary objective of the North Dakota Oral History Project was to conduct oral tape recorded interviews with North Dakotans who lived through the state's history and who could speak of this history from a first-hand basis. Interviewees were photographed at the time of their interviews. In addition, the project borrowed over 6,000 historical photographs which were copied and added to the State Historical Society's collection. Many interviewees also donated family histories, documents, letters, ledgers, books, and artifacts.

Biographical Sketch: Haral Christianson

Haral Christianson was born April 2, 1892 at Helgeland, Norway to Anfind Knudsen and Ales Sjarsdatter Ersland. The Christianson family immigrated to the United States and settle in Minnesota. He was raised and educated in Osage, Iowa and Driscoll. In 1910, the family moved to Lein Township where he farmed with his parents until 1928. He married Priscilla Olauson April 14, 1928 in Mandan (N.D.). They continued to farm north of Driscoll (N.D.) until 1933 when they moved to a farm near Clear Lake Township. In 1945 they moved to a farm south of Driscoll (N.D.). In 1957 they retired from farming and moved into Driscoll (N.D.), where he worked for Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Company until 1976. His wife, Priscilla Olauson Christianson died in 1979. In 1984, Haral Christianson moved into the Golden Manor Nursing Home in Steele (N.D.). He died November 10, 1986 at a Bismarck Hospital. Services were held on November 14, 1986 at Golden Manor Nursing Home in Steele (N.D.) with Reverend Robert Pestal officiating. Services were also held at Grace Lutheran Church in Driscoll (N.D.) with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Driscoll (N.D.). He was a member of the Driscoll Men’s Club. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Marian) Swenning, Driscoll (N.D.) and Mrs. Leonard (Gladys) Diede, Wishek (N.D.); four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
