Abstract: Images taken or collected by John Beck of Center (N.D.), coal, early farm scenes, Chas. Rose Grocery Store, Northern Pacific Railroad, Downtown Bismarck (N.D.), Fargo (N.D.), and a Fourth of July Celebration in Mandan (N.D).
Provenance: The collection was donated to the State Historical Society of North Dakota by John Beck in April 1974. The image of the Northern Pacific Railway Depot in Mandan (N.D.) was copied on April 20, 1987 and added to the collection.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John J. Beck was born to Dr. Francis O. and Marian Ann (Muehl) Beck of McClusky, North Dakota on January 1, 1941 in Bismarck, North Dakota. His family moved to Bismarck where his father operated his dental practice. John graduated from Cathedral of the Holy Spirit School in 1954, and St. Mary’s Central High School in 1958. He graduated with an Associate of Arts from Bismarck Junior College in 1961. Afterward he received training at the Dental Technical School of the University of California graduating in 1963. He studied art through the correspondence course, Famous Artist School of New York. He worked at Dakota National Bank in Bismarck, State Highway Department in Bismarck from 1960-1961, Arnold A. Wellu, Welu Dental Lab in Fargo from 1965-1969. He was the Museum Manager at the Great Plains Museum in Bismarck from 1969-1971, and a Museum Assistant at the State Historical Society of North Dakota from 1971 to 1974. He has lived in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota most of his life. His hobbies are oil painting, farming and operating steam railroad trains and railroad equipment.
