Abstract: Seventeen letters, envelopes, and a page of personal stamps, related to George W. and Joseph Edwin Kenney, who served in the Fourth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Five of the letters were written from Fort Abercrombie, N.D.

Provenance: The State Historical Society acquired the collection from Andrew Haug on June 15, 2018.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

George W. Kenney and his brother Joseph Edwin Kenney enlisted in Company D, Fourth Minnesota Infantry Regiment in October 1861. Their company was stationed at Fort Abercrombie (D.T.) before joining the rest of the regiment to fight Confederate forces in the South.
George died from complications of a fever on June 28, 1862 near Cedar Creek, Mississippi, while Joseph was killed in battle during the Vicksburg Campaign on May 22, 1863.
