Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary Vocal Arts Ensemble of Bismarck will present an old fashioned “Doc McKurdy’s Medicine Show” on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum.
Under the music direction of Katherine Henjum, the Vocal Arts Ensemble will transform itself into a late-19th century traveling troupe bringing entertainment and “healing” remedies to rural America.
“Medicine Shows were a popular vaudeville-style entertainment around the time we became a state,” said Henjum, associate professor of Voice and director of the Vocal Arts Ensemble. “The music, dance and ‘spiel’ performed on Sunday will be much like what the early citizens of Bismarck would have heard in the street, in the dance hall, and in the saloon.”
“The Vocal Arts Ensemble is excited for the opportunity to perform for the Bismarck audience at the Heritage Center. It is a perfect venue to bring to life a bit of our musical heritage,” added Henjum.
