The State Historical Society of ND is announcing the 2nd Annual Historic Preservation Photo Contest as part of Historic Preservation Month.
The 2013 Historic Preservation Photo Contest focus will be on theaters. This includes movie, drive-in, and stage theaters, amphitheaters, and opera houses. These places have played a major role in the entertainment of North Dakotans for many years and are currently facing another technology change and threat to their survival. At the end of this year, new movies will only be available in digital format and that means the installation of expensive equipment. The SHSND along with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) strives to preserve North Dakota’s historic heritage and examples of its significant historic properties.
Photos submitted for the contest will be used to enhance the SHSND web page that will include information and history of theaters throughout North Dakota. The winning photo will be made into a poster for distribution. Additionally, information on the theaters will be added to the North Dakota Cultural Resources Survey and provide a foundation for future intensive level surveys, context development and historic research.
