North Dakota Blue Book

2011-2013 Blue Book Cover

Since 1889, there have been 30 North Dakota Blue Books published by the North Dakota Secretary of State. Beginning in 1995, these books have been published every biennium. These volumes are a compendium of information about the state’s political, economic, social, cultural and environmental history, and current status.

Recent editions are sold in the Museum Store at the North Dakota Heritage Center, 701-328-2822.

A total of 16 Blue Books can now be viewed online using Digital Horizons. They can be searched individually or all at once.

Instructions to search the 16 currently digitized Blue Books individually:
  • Click on the link (right column) of the individual Blue Book you wish to search.
  • Enter your search terms in the Search this object box in the green menu on the upper left side of the page, then click Search.
  • The pages that contain your search terms will be highlighted in red on the left menu. You can click those red links to go directly to the pages containing your search terms.
  • You can also click Previous Hit or Next Hit to move through the pages containing your search terms.
  • To return to this page, look for the tab or window in your browser.
Instructions to search all 16 of the currently digitized Blue Books at once:
  • Click here to go to Digital Horizons.
  • Click the Clear All button at the lower left corner of the page to deselect all of the collections. Then click the box next to North Dakota Blue Books.
  • Enter your search terms in the All of the words box at the top of the page, then click Search. The Blue Books containing your search terms will be displayed on the results page.
  • Click the cover of the Blue Book of your choice to look inside for your search terms.
  • The pages containing your search terms will be highlighted in red on the left menu. You can click those red links to go directly to the pages containing your search terms.
  • You can also click Previous Hit or Next Hit to move through the pages containing your search terms.
  • To return to the results page, click Back to Results in the upper right hand corner.
  • You can click any of the Blue Book covers to see where your search terms are in the other Blue Book editions.
  • To run another search, click Advanced Search in the North Dakota Blue Book banner across the top of any page.
