Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired this collection for Gilbert W. Stewart in June 1946. It was transferred from the Museum Division to the State Archives in August 1987.

Biographical Sketch
From the Bismarck Tribune Nov. 8, 1949

Gilbert W. Stewart was born July 24, 1874 in Pennsylvania to Reverend and Mrs. William G. Stewart. Gilbert was the oldest of four children. He attended high school Redstone Academy in Uniontown (Pa.). He earned his way through Washington & Jefferson College, Washington (Pa.) graduating in 1897. After a period of teaching and employment with Westinghouse firms he entered Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. While there he was called to Haley (S.D.) for a summer job as a Christian preacher to the cowboys, and lived in a sod shanty. At the end of summer the congregation passed the hat and offered him $100 to return the following summer. He graduated from the Seminary in June 1907 and took a church in Wilton (N.D.).
He married Charlotte Macomber September 1, 1909 and they took a church at New Salem where they stayed one year. The next year Stewart bought the Wilton newspaper, The News. The Stewarts had two children, Gilbert Jr. and Jeanette. Stewart assisted his father-in-law, Mr. Macomber, who was president and general manager of the Washburn Lignite Coal Company, then reputed to be the largest lignite mine in the world. Stewart was mayor of Wilton, served on the school board was a Boy Scout troop leader and Sunday school superintendent.
Stewart was vice-chairman of the McLean County Red Cross chapter during WWI. He was president of the ND Press Association. Governor R. A. Nestos appointed him to the state Board of Pardons.
In 1925 he became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Mandan. He was active in the Mandan community being a Rotary member, Morton County chair of the Red Cross, on the Rodeo Committee, and head of the Federal Relief program in the county during the Depression.
In 1931 he was moderator of the Synod of North Dakota and was delegate to the national general assembly of the church many times.
He died November 7, 1949.
