Abstract: Color photographs of North Dakota towns taken by Kukowski between 1989-1993. Images include businesses, grain elevators, courthouses, post offices, views of main streets, schools, bridges, and train depots. 

Provenance: The collection was donated to the State Historical Society of North Dakota by Ruth Kukowski, Francis’ daughter, in September 2013.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
from Forum (Fargo, ND) Nov. 8, 2011

Francis James Kukowski was born July 13, 1935, in Fargo (ND), the son of Frank and Agnes (Denery) Kukowski. He grew up and attended the country school in Georgetown (MN). Francis also attended St. John’s Prep School in Collegeville (MN) for two years. He graduated from Shanley High School in Fargo in 1953.

As a young man, he farmed with his father until he entered the U.S. Army. Francis served overseas in Germany, and traveled extensively in Europe. After discharge, he returned to farm near Georgetown. In 1959, he married Carol Myren. IN 1974 he married Kathleen Wilson. In 1996, he married Joan Diesch.

Francis loved to farm and care for his farmstead. His love of geography and history led him to become an accomplished amateur photographer. Francis also traveled to 17 different countries and 45 states. He has compiled a number of books of photographs,  including collections of grain elevators, bridges, churches and courthouses.

Francis passed away in rural Georgetown (MN) on November 4, 2011. Francis is survived by six children five grandchildren, a brother, and several  nieces and nephews.

Williams County:
Organized in 1889. Named in memory of Erastus A. Williams, who came to Yankton in 1869 and later to Bismarck where he was an outstanding figure in promoting the interests of western North Dakota.  His ten terms in the Territorial Legislature were climaxed by his service as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1883, at which time the territorial capitol was moved from Yankton to Bismarck.
