HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Bismarck Rotary Club was formally organized on March 4, 1920 by the Fargo Rotary Club. Charter members were: J. Leonard Bell, Raymond Bergson, Rev. George Buzzelle, George A, Duemeland, Fred L. Conklin, Henry J. Duemeland, George F. Dullam, Paris R. Fields, Burt Finney, John P. French, Harry P. Goddard, Arthur W. Gussner, William E. Lahr, George Keniston, A. W. Lucas, George D. Mann, George W. Gustafson, Carl Nelson, George L. Price, Dr. Eric P. Quain, Dr. Lloyd Schipfer, N. N. Steele, Dr. S. B. Toney, and Jock Whitney.
The original charter number was 558. Realignment of district lines over the years has resulted in Bismarck Rotary being assigned number 681 in District 5580.
In less than a year of existence, the Bismarck Rotary sponsored the Dickinson Rotary on February 21, 1921 and the Mandan Rotary later that year. By 1984 the Bismarck Rotary had grown so large that another club, the Far West was sponsored.
The Buffalo Horn was first published in 1921 and was first edited by George F. Will under the name Adenoid Al. Editorship passed to George Bird from 1931-1980. Later editors were Bob McLeod, James P. Swanson, and Denise Spanjer.
Meetings were held in the Patterson Hotel from 1920-19230, the Grand Pacific Hotel from 1930-1973 and the Municipal Country Club, Sheraton Galleria, Holiday Inn, and Elks Club after that.
An arboretum cosponsored by the Bismarck Rotary Club and Bismarck Parks and Recreation was established in northwest Bismarck. In 1961 it was dedicated by the Bismarck Park Board as the George Bird Memorial Rotary Park. When it became part of the Municipal golf course a new area was dedicated as the George Bird Memorial Park and Arboretum in 1985.
Rotarians work with 4-H, high school students, ring bells for the Salvation Army and provide other community service.
