Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired this collection from Herb W. Altenberg in September 1992.

Biographical Sketch - Fred and Emelia Altenburg
from Stark County Heritage and Destiny, 1978

Fred and Emelia Altenburg moved to Belfield, N.D. March 1909. Fred William Altenburg was born in Amboy, Minn. Oct. 27, 1876. As a young man he learned the harness trade from Fred Schwartz at Amboy. He moved to Fessenden N.D. in 1902 and worked in a harness shop where he met Emelia Markwart.

Emelia Markwart was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Markwart in Russia Dec. 27, 1886 and came to the Fessenden area with her family in 1890. She married Fred Altenburg in Fessenden Nov. 9, 1904. Their son Herbert was born Oct. 5, 1905. Soon after, they moved to Coleharbor N.D. where Fred started in the hardware business. Their daughter Ruth was born Oct. 24, 1907. Early in 1909 the hardware store burned leaving the young couple without a means of earning a living. The family moved to Belfield where Fred became manager of the Sentinel Butte Saddlery Co. In 1916 Fred and Emelia filed on a homestead west of Medora, Emelia and the two children lived on the homestead in a log house from the first of April to the last of November. For three years the children went to school in Medora in the fall and spring and in Belfield during the winter months. Fred maintained the home in Belfield since he worked in the harness shop year round.

Fred passed away Nov. 13, 1958 at age 82. Emilia died Feb. 28, 1976,

Biographical Sketch - Herbert W. Altenburg

Herbert W. Altenburg, 92, Bismarck, died on Tuesday May 26, 1998 at St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck. He was born Oct. 5, 1905 in Fessenden to Frederick W. and Emelia (Markwart) Altenburg. He moved with his parents to Coleharbor at the age of one and to Belfield in March 1909. He attended school in Belfield and graduated from high school there in 1924. On Nov. 29, 1936 he married Brenda Telford in Belfield. He began training to be a barber while attending high school and continued barbering until they moved to Bismarck in 1972. He was an ardent sports fan of all local sports as well as professional sports. He worked as an usher at the Bismarck Civic Center for several years. He was a 50 year member of the Roosevelt Memorial Lodge and also the Centennial Eastern Star. He belonged to the Senior Citizens, Order of the Blind, and the Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Brenda, Bismarck; one daughter, Sharon Grinsteinner, Kamuela, Hawaii; one son, Jeffrey, Dickinson; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a sister.
