Abstract: An artificial collection from a variety of sources, the collection includes images of family and businesses owned by Marquis de Mores, primarily in Medora, ND and in France.
Provenance: The original Marquis de Mores Collection was received as a gift from James Foley in 1910. One photograph of Medora with Louis and Athenais (deMores Box 1/c#60) was donated by Harold Schafer (received from Tony Vallombrosa) on 03-23-1976. 60 photographsdonated by Harold Schafer were separated from Marquis De Mores Papers #10036. 92 photographs and postcards and 101 negatives were transferred from # 10036. Antoine Manca de Vallombrosa de Mores donated one framed photograph of Medora with lock of her hair (transferred to Museums Collection 1972) and collection of 31 photographs of town of Medora, Marquis as a child and other family portraits. 00042-0164 is part of the Ralph Thompson Collection 00500 (00500-0005), copied on 12-19-1985. Four photographs were transferred from Museum Division including cabinet card of Marquis de Mores by Sarony, Photographer New York, NY, cart-de-visite of infant in diaper by Robert Faulkner & Company, London, Cabinet card of Medora with one man, four women, and two children seated on steps of Chateau de Mores by G. Gilbert, Mandan ND, photograph on board of man and dog in buggy pulled by one horse labeled Star Mail Route 1903. Two photographs of William and Kate (Fordham) Van Dreische were received from Marjorie J. Soper on 11-06-1992.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Antoine Amedee Marie Vincent Manca de Vallombrosa was born on June 14, 1858 in Paris, France. He acquired the title of Marquis de Mores at the age of 21. He married Medora von Hoffman, an American heiress, on February 15, 1882 in Cannes, France. They had two sons, Louis and Paul, and one daughter, Athenais.
Hearing rumors of opportunities in Dakota Territory, de Mores traveled there and in April 1883 founded the town of Medora. He established the Northern Pacific Refrigerator Car Company with hopes of revolutionizing the livestock industry. Local opposition to the Marquis' plans lead to the death of Reiley Luffsey, a suspected rustler. The Marquis was indicted for murder and later was freed on a "not guilty” verdict. The business failed in 1886.
De Mores and his family spent the winter of 1886 in New York and returned to France in 1887. In 1888 the Marquis promoted the building of a railroad in China but due to political opposition the project was never completed. While on an expedition in Northern Africa the Marquis was murdered. He died at the age of 38 in June 1896.
